Quotes and reactions from the top riders on the first day of the MotoGP test

A selection of words and thoughts from the main protagonists after Saturday´s action in Catalunya for the MotoGP test:

Carlos Checa, 7th position after 44 laps:
´I´m not really happy with my performance today,´ said the Spaniard. ´We´ve made quite a few changes but I still can´t get a good feeling. Anyway, I certainly don´t feel that I can go any faster at the moment. I´m having problems with edge-grip on the right-hand corners. It´s my problem and I must fix it myself, that´s it.´

Loris Capirossi, 2nd position, highest speed 325.9kmh/202.5mph:
´I am very happy with what we achieved so far. It is great to be fastest on the straight though top speed is not so important, what I am really happy about is the overall performance of the bike-it is very, very good-and it´s getting better every day. I´m using the new bike for the first time here, so we´re just working at fine-tuning now.´

Max Biaggi,13th position:
´This is the first test where all the riders have been present and this makes it more exciting. It was a shame that we had a few small problems that have bugged us all day and the truth is I am surprised that I have gone so slowly. Throughout the session I have tried to improve the performance of the bike into the corners as I am not completely satisfied. With the team we have tried many solutions and I have been among the riders who completed the most laps today. I hope to be able to solve the problems tomorrow.´

Alex Barros, 1st position:
´My lap time was slightly slower than what I did earlier in the week, but I´m more than happy with the result. Today I was very consistent, even with the track being less predictable in the cooler conditions. The two days testing we have over the others has proven to be a reasonable advantage, so I´m not getting too excited about the times or our position until I see how tomorrow ends up. Even so we´re very happy with the bike; we´ve completed all the major changes like setting up the geometry, and now we only need to fine tune the package.´

Troy Bayliss, 25th position out of 27:
´There are some tracks that are easy first time out, while others take longer to get to grips with. We have been working on a lot of thing here, mainly grip and handling, and I felt like I had run into a bit of a wall this morning. We finally started to make some progress in the afternoon, just as it started raining! Overall I am pretty happy, but after going to so many new tracks it´d be nice to go to a place that I know, somewhere that I know the limit.´

Valentino Rossi, 4th place:
´For only one hour was it possible to push but during that time the bike felt good and I was happy. It feels like last season except stronger. Sure, this time last year we were ahead of the competition and now it is very even. It will be a good close fight for the race wins. Today I wore a helmet with special paint. The ´7´ is for Barry because I loved Barry as a person and a rider and the rainbow colour with peace written on the back is because we don't want war! Simple as that!´
