Youichi Ui: I can win in Suzuka!

At this moment in time Youichi Ui is overflowing with confidence. After leaving Derbi and linking up with Italian team Sterilgarda Racing, the veteran Japanese racer is undergoing a personal revival in his sporting career. His change of team and bike, he now rides an Aprilia after four years with the Spanish manufacturer, has led to a security and backing that produced a prosperous pre-season and he now says that he can win the first race of the season in Suzuka.

`In the IRTA test of Jerez it was raining for two days and I was not so happy with my performance´, the runner-up of the 2000 and 2001 World Championship started to explain despite gaining the second best time. `The second day I also crashed but that was entirely my error. In the first outing of the next test at Estoril I felt a lot of pain because of the fall. The track and conditions were good but I wanted to take it easy. The second day saw worse weather and a lot of rain, I could only run for less time but put a lot of effort in and found my rhythm to take a good time,´ he added, his best effort tunring out to be the number one lap of the day.

The rider from Chiba was able to make some valuable conclusions after his training with the Italian machine. `In these tests I was able to see the reactions and handling of the Aprilia. The last version of the bike worked really well, even though the motor is not yet at an optimum level. Last year´s engine is faster than the new one at the moment. This weekend I go to Italy for the last test of the off-season with the other Aprilia teams. We are working mainly in the motor for better speed even though i hope to use the ´old´ unit for the first GP.´
Ui rounded off his thoughts with a serious warning for his rivals: ´Obviously i think I can win in Suzuka! I have to try and set a tone for the whole season right away because I aim to be number one come the end of the year.´
