Poggiali sounds final warning ahead of season opener

Manuel Poggiali has spoken modestly about his ambitions for his rookie season in the 250cc World Championship this year, but his performances in testing have spoken for themselves. Yesterday he sent out another warning to his quarter-litre rivals on the first day of private Aprilia tests at Mugello, where he lapped within half a second of the pole record despite never having ridden the RSW at the Italian circuit before.

Poggiali´s best time of 1´54.6 was just one tenth quicker than his former 125cc title rival Toni Elías, whilst the Spaniard´s Telefónica Movistar Repsol-YPF team-mate Fonsi Nieto continued a less than impressive preseason with a best effort of 1´56.5. Team Aspar Jr. pair Joan Olivé (1´57.9) and Héctor Faubel (1´58.4) were also present, whilst Team Campetella rider Franco Battaini marked his return from injury with a 1´55.9, the quickest lap of the privateers.

Testing was set to continue on Tuesday morning, although all the bikes and equipment must be boxed up by lunchtime so that it can be shipped out to Suzuka for the first day of qualifying on April 4.
