Sito Pons ready for a fresh title assault

Sito Pons knows what it takes to win World Championships. Fifteen years ago he wrote his name in the history books by becoming the first Spaniard to lift the 250cc title, which he successfully defended the following season. Now a successful Team Manager, Pons believes he has that winning feeling once again after the arrival of a new title sponsor and two riders from a select club who won MotoGP races last year. Max Biaggi, who finished runner-up to Valentino Rossi riding the four-stroke Yamaha with two wins, and Tohru Ukawa, who took one victory and finished third overall have joined a team riding high on preseason optimism.

`We have our strongest ever team and surely our best ever chance of winning the Championship,´ declared Pons, whose team also took two victories last season with Alex Barros on the Honda RC211V machine they will again have at their disposition this year. `Never before have we had riders who finished second and third in the Championship the previous year. Put them with a title sponsor like Camel, who have the same power and passion for success as ourselves and we have a great chance´.

Biaggi, of course, returns to Honda after four years with Yamaha, with whom he has finished runner-up in the series for the past two seasons. `Max will have the right team around him to complete both his and our dream - that MotoGP title,´ continues Pons. `It is vital for Max that he has the right technical people around him. After our winning experiences with the four-stroke Honda last year we can provide him with just that. However it´s his passion to win which is the most important and we share exactly the same way of thinking. We will not rest until we have provided Max with a World Championship winning machine to fulfil both our dreams.´

Ukawa comes straight from the official HRC team as the only rider other than Rossi to have a full season on the RC211V under his belt. `This is a good move for Tohru and he will find it different riding for us than for the factory team,´ said Pons. `He will have the freedom to set up and improve the bike the way he wants. He did really well last year wining in Welkom and finishing third in the Championship. He knows the RCV Honda as well as any rider and that will help us all.´
