Marco Melandri is well into the rehabilitation programme for his broke right foot, injured after a crash during the opening practice sessions at the first round of the Championship in Suzuka. The Italian rider of the Fortuna Yamaha team is spending some days in the clinic of Dr. Costa based at Imola and the first medical provisions regarding his condition state that he could be back in action at the first European race of 2003, the Marlboro Grand Prix of Spain, that occurs May 11th in Jerez.

Melandri has improved considerably from his ailment. The hematoma of the right femur has reduced and he now has a cast on his right ankle for support so that he can stand and move around. `I am happy because everything is going as planned,´ he commented. `The foot hurts a litte but I can move it and I only have problems with the fourth toe that is really sensitive, Dr Costa has told me that this is more or less normal. Tomorrow the stitches come out.´

For his part, Alex Barros, who crashed during the warm-up before the race on Sunday, is back in Brazil, where he has started physio treatment on his knee, so he can take part in the Arnette Africa´s Grand Prix, on April 27 in South Africa. The rider from the Gauloises Yamaha team suffered a small fracture, bruising and stretched cruciate ligaments of the knee.
