Interesting facts and figures prior to the 125cc GP

Youichi Ui starts from pole position for the 17th time in his Grand Prix career, but the first since the last GP of 2001 in Brazil. Ui set a new lap record on his way to taking victory in South Africa in 2001, having started from pole position. The pole time is the fastest ever lap of the Welkom circuit by a 125cc machine. The top 13 riders on the grid are faster than the existing lap record for 125cc machines.

Pablo Nieto´s second place on the grid is his best qualifying result since the Catalan GP last year when he was also in second.

Andrea Dovizioso has qualified on the front row of the grid for the first time, his previous best being 5th place at Motegi last year. Dovizioso´s race position of fifth in Japan is his highest ever result in Grand Prix racing. Alex De Angelis has failed to finish four times in the past seven races having crashed three times and retired once.
