Podium for Barros at Mugello would make him second highest points scorer

Alex Barros could move into second position in the all-time list of premier class Grand Prix points-scorers if he finishes on the podium at Mugello this weekend. The Brazilian currently lies third in the list with 1597 puntos, 14 less than Spanish former World Champion Alex Crivillé. The classification, which includes both 500cc and MotoGP results, is headed by Mick Doohan, who clocked up a massive 2,298 points on his way to five world titles.

After his fifth place in France two weeks ago, Max Biaggi is now in eighth place and is the highest Italian on the list, with one point more than Giacomo Agostini. However, it should be noted that the modern points system awards higher scores than in previous eras. Carlos Checa and Valentino Rossi share twelfth place having scored 979 points each in the elite category, and either could break the 1,000 mark with a win on Sunday. Of the top ten riders in the classification, only Barros, Biaggi and Norick Abe still compete in the series.
