Poggiali powers to provisional pole

Manuel Poggiali took a leaf out of the book of Loris Capirossi in the first qualifying for the 250cc race, pulling out a last lap effort to dislodge Randy De Puniet from provisional pole at the end of a session principally dominated by the Frenchman. De Puniet was unable to defend top spot in the final stages after crashing out, leaving the way for the San Marino rider to establish an early advantage for his `home´ race, with Fonsi Nieto also posting a good late effort to move up to second. Franco Battaini rarely threatened the top three, but sealed the final spot on an all-Aprilia provisional front row with the fourth quickest time.

Toni Elias, winner of the previous two Grand Prix, seemed to be suffering from the effects of a heavy crash in the morning free practice and was unable to make an impression on the top four positions, although he did make a notable improvement in the second half of the session to clock the fifth fastest time. He is joined on the second row by Honda pair Roberto Rolfo and Sebastian Porto and Naoki Matsudo on the Yamaha.
