Ui takes provisional pole after entertaining first qualifying

The 125cc riders went into battle for the Cinzano Gran Premio d´Italia in determined fashion today, with Youichi Ui taking provisional pole after a hotly contended first qualifying session. The Japanese veteran held on to top spot by 0.086 seconds after a late attack by Australian teenager Casey Stoner, who faded on the final lap as he struggled to cope with the intense heat at the Italian circuit this afternoon. However, the 17 year old will be happy enough with second place today, as will his team manager Lucio Cecchinello, who joins the youngster on the provisional front row in fourth. Pablo Nieto posted a late effort to seal an all-Aprilia top four in third place.

Dani Pedrosa perhaps felt the effects of the Mugello circuit traditionally favouring Aprilia machines as he struggled to a second row spot in fifth place, whilst his fellow Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso, quickest in the morning free practice, was way back down in 18th. In fact, Pedrosa was the only non-Aprilia rider in the top ten, as Steve Jenkner, Stefano Perugini and Alex de Angelis all sealed provisional second row positions.
