Angel Nieto and Sito Pons honoured at the Circuit de Catalunya

Two major contributors to the glorious history of Spanish motorcycle racing, Angel Nieto and Sito Pons, were yesterday honoured at the Circuit de Catalunya. The former World Champions unveiled commemorative plaques featuring their names on the Avenida de los Campeones (Champions´ Avenue), a special area at the circuit dedicated to kings of two and four wheel racing. The plaques of Pons and Nieto join those of Alex Crivillé and Michael Schumacher, the first two men to receive this distinction.

Angel Nieto, winner of thirteen world titles in different categories said: `I am excited that my name figures amongst a community that saw me born and grow as a rider and I am proud that I am remembered, 17 years after my retirement.´ Meanwhile, Sito Pons, twice 250cc World Champion, explained: `This plaque brings back memories because some of my greatest successes were at this circuit. I am honoured by this tribute. Nowadays our country is a leader in world motorsport competition and this is possible thanks to everybody´s effort.´
