Jorge Lorenzo prepares for Assen with Jarama victory

Jorge Lorenzo took victory in the second round of the Fortuna Spanish Championship (CEV) 2003, at the Jarama circuit on Sunday, beating fellow 125 GP rider Alvaro Bautista by 12.159 seconds. It was Derbi´s first appearance in their national competition, which they last contested in 1999, with victory for Manuel Poggiali. Lorenzo started from pole position and dominated for almost the whole race, conceding the leadership to Bautista for just half a lap, in what will be a huge morale booster for the team as they prepare for the Gauloises Dutch TT at Assen this coming Saturday.

`I am happy for myself and for the whole team,´ confirmed Lorenzo after the race. `We have had a tough start to the World Championship season but over the last few weeks we have made continual improvement. The Spanish Championship has always been top level – the best in Europe – and it is never easy to win even with a World Championship team and material. It was difficult to escape and get a rhythm together on hard tyres but I gradually built an advantage lap by lap. I hope this result can help us to progress and improve our best Grand Prix effort of sixth over the next couple of races. This is my first win on a Derbi and I hope there are many more to come.´
