Nieto and Elías become the main pursuers of Poggiali

When the Championship resumes in two weeks and enters the second phase, the riders of the Repsol Telefónica Movistar team will become the main threat to the ambitions of the standings leader, Manuel Poggiali. Slowly chopping away at his lead Fonsi Nieto yesterday scored his first win of the season, while his team-mate, Toni Elías, who collected victories in Jerez and Le Mans, now lies level with the consistent force of Roberto Rolfo in joint third.

At Donington Park the closest race of the day took place between Nieto and Poggiali mainly in the latter half of the 250cc sprint. In the opening laps Toni Elias had been in firm contention for the top spot on the podium until an error running wide into a corner mean that he lost touch with the leaders. Elias was then pipped to the podium on the penultimate lap by the Australian Ant West and had to try and be content with fourth position.

Speaking directly afterwards, the disappointed Catalan remarked: `I started really well, had a good rhythm and felt comfortable on the bike. I tried to put pressure on Poggiali and then made a mistake, I had to run off the track and it proved to be so costly. Afterwards I could not regain the ground that I had lost, there was a brief moment when I was coming back quite strong and if West had not caught me up and got in between us then I think I might have been able to get very close. I knew it was not going to be possible in the time I had left and now I just have to think in the next race and look at the Championship because this is the main goal.´
