Chaz Davies learning fast in the 250 class

Whilst most of the riders are enjoying a rest during the brief summer break, Chaz Davies is already impatient to begin the next phase of his intense learning programme in the 250cc World Championship. The 16 year old, who earlier this season became the youngest rider ever to score points in the quarter-litre class, took his best finish of the season with twelfth at the Sachsenring two weeks ago but remains disappointed he did not challenge for a top ten spot. He heads to the Brno circuit next weekend determined to learn from his mistakes in Germany, and hopes to banish the memory of his worst moment in Grand Prix racing one year ago.

"In Germany my hope for the race was to run with Alex Debon and Joan Olive, because we were close together in qualifying and I was sure I could race with them," explains Davies, who is spending the summer with his family at home in Wales. "But my tyre was far too soft – it was more or less used up by the end of the sighting lap! From the first lap to the end I could not control the rear end and almost fell off many times, so it was an achievement just to finish the race. When I saw that Debon had finished ninth I was annoyed, because with the right tyre I would have been in the top ten."

"The lesson I learnt was to start the weekend with a hard tyre and only change if the weather cools. That way I can concentrate on finding the right tyre pressure and spend more time finding a good base set-up for the bike. I am looking forward to doing that at Brno and seeing how much difference we can make up."

"This is my second visit to the Czech Republic but to be honest I can't remember much about the circuit. Last year I had a really nasty accident in qualifying, when my handlebars came apart in my hands and I crashed into the tyre wall and badly damaged my back. I had to be airlifted to hospital and I missed the race, so it was a weekend to forget. Hopefully we can have a trouble free weekend this time around and if I can be in the top twelve again then I will be very satisfied."
