Interesting stats and facts ahead of the 250cc race in Japan

The last six races in the 250cc class have been won by six different riders, (West, Nieto, Rolfo, De Puniet, Elias, Poggiali).

Toni Elias starts from pole for the third successive race after never previously having had a pole in the 250cc GP class. Elias scored his first ever 250cc victory last year at Motegi.

Franco Battaini starts from his best grid position since he qualified in second place at the French GP at Le Mans. Randy De Puniet has finished on the podium at the last four successive races and eight times in total during 2003, more than any other rider in the 250cc class.

Sebastian Porto starts from the front row for the first time since his pole position at the German GP. Porto has not had a podium finish since the Australian GP last year.

Manuel Poggiali's seventh place on the grid is his lowest grid position since the opening race of the year at Suzuka.

Roberto Rolfo is the only rider in the 250cc class to have scored points at every GP this year.

Chaz Davies' 12th place on the grid is his best ever qualifying result in Grand Prix racing. Fonsi Nieto has qualified outside the top ten for the first time since the Italian GP in 2001.
