Work begins on the new circuit in Qatar

Construction work has begun on a new circuit in Qatar, which is set to host a round of the MotoGP World Championship for the first time in 2004. An army of 40 machines and 100 trucks set to work at the site last week, with the first bricks set to be laid in a few days' time. The actual track layout will be dug out of the earth over the next three months, with the asphalt due to be laid in January.

The Qatar Grand Prix will be the thirteenth round of the 2004 MotoGP World Championship and will take place on the 2nd October. Plans for the track and facilities were approved by the MotoGP safety commission at the Marlboro Grande Premio de Portugal last month.
