Elias continues form with provisional pole in Malaysia

Toni Elias continued his run of form in the 250cc class, setting provisional pole position by almost a clear second from Manuel Poggiali. Elias, who trails Poggiali by 30 points in the championship, clocked a 2'08.263 in the first qualifying session, closing in on the 2'08.067 record held by his team-mate Fonsi Nieto, who could only manage fifth today. Randy De Puniet was third fastest, whilst Sebastian Porto completed the provisional front row in fourth.

Roberto Rolfo suffered an uncharacteristic crash at the end of the session when he was pushing to improve on seventh place on the provisional grid. The Italian was uninjured and tomorrow he will look to better his second row placing behind Nieto and Franco Battaini. Chinese wildcard riders Zhao Huang Shi and Xian He Zi both failed to make the 107% qualifying mark today but will be optimistic of doing so tomorrow after improving their times significantly from the morning to afternoon sessions.
