Roby Rolfo: "I'm going to Valencia for the title"

With his win at Philip Island Roberto Rolfo has opened the door for a fantastic end of season showdown at the final race of the year. The crown of the 250cc World Championship has to be decided in Valencia in just two weeks time after a sustained contest that begun in earnest for at least five riders back in April at Suzuka. Manuel Poggiali (Aprilia) and Rolfo (Honda) now face a duel of talent, composure and luck, the base components that will determine whether the grand prize falls to one side or the other.

Even though Poggiali will arrive at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo with a seven point advantage, for Rolfo it will be the rider from San Marino who will bare more pressure of having to finally defend and confirm the lead he has held in the series for most of the year. "From the beginning of the season I have wanted to invite my fans and supporters to an occasion such as this. In Valencia there is a title waiting to be won and I will go there and will do everything in my power to take it," asserted the 23 year old. "At that race he will have the pressure and everything is there for him to lose."

Rolfo is the only rider in the World Championships, apart from Valentino Rossi and Shinya Nakano, to have taken points in every GP of 2003. His consistency is one of his main strengths: In the last two seasons he has finished in the top ten from 43 out of 45 races since the Japanese GP at the start of 2001. The two occasions where he missed out were at Assen in 2001 and Brno last year. This string of points scores earned him fourth place in the 2001 Championship and third spot last season. In 2003 he has also started to win races. With two victories and four more podiums, he has firmly established his credentials to capture the number one plate and is now ready to clasp one hand on the title after his exemplary performance in Phillip Island:

"In Australia it was really fun to be riding on that edge between wet and dry, even though it was difficult to maintain concentration right until the end." Rolfo's nickname is `El Lupo´ (the Wolf) the same figure that he has on his website and the motto of the character is ‘Full Gas!' and this was exactly his strategy at Phillip Island: `During the warm-up, which was very wet I knew that I could go quickly in those extreme conditions. I thought it was important on that occasion to go wide open, so in the start I cracked open the throttle and did not think about anything else, only to be in front of everyone."
