David de Gea looking for silver lining in Spanish Championship

After a season battling against the odds in the MotoGP World Championship, David de Gea will this weekend finally get the chance to pick up some silverware in the penultimate round of the highly respected CEV Fortuna Spanish Championship. The Spaniard, who impressed many in the Grand Prix paddock with his determined performances riding vastly underpowered two-stroke and four-stroke machinery for the WCM team this season, returns to Valencia just two weeks after the final race of the MotoGP season with one hand on the coveted national Formula Extreme title.

Riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000, De Gea needs to score just four points more than his closest challenger, José O. Fernández, and finish ahead of former Grand Prix regulars José Luis Cardoso and David Tomás to secure the crown. It would be a welcome reward for De Gea, who was unable to score points for WCM despite his often heroic qualifying performances which saw him occasionally start ahead of factory riders such as Garry McCoy on the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR and former 250cc World Champion Olivier Jacque on the Yamaha M1.
