Marco Simoncelli signs up to race with the Exalt Race Team for two years

Italian Marco Simoncelli will ride with the Exalt Race for the next two seasons after reaching an agreement with the director of the Italian set-up, Fiorenzo Caponera. Simoncelli, who will turn 17 in the first few days of the new year, is considered to be one of the most promising talents of the new generation of riders to emerge from his country.

He made his GP debut this season by embarking on a full World Championship campaign with the Matteoni team and scored 21st place overall once proceedings had finished at the final race of the year in Valencia; a race at which he was vying for the podium. The teenager now inherits the saddle left by Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi, who has signed to steer the Malaguti in ‘04.

Simoncelli, had his first contact with his new squad at the private Aprilia tests held in Jerez this week and expressed his satisfaction at the change: "This year was really good for me with the Matteoni team because I learned so much, and now I am starting this new adventure to continue a positive progression over the next two seasons," he explained to motograndprix.com.

"I am sure that I have found a good team," the Italian added. "I have already tried the Aprilia and the chassis seems quite familiar but the engine is very strong, so I am happy."

Simoncelli has still not really sorted out his goals for 2004 but hints towards a likely objective: "I want to get off to a fast start, right from the very first race and basically I do not want to finish a GP outside of the top ten positions."
