Marco Melandri: "The favourites are Gibernau and Capirossi"

Marco Melandri was at the Bologna Motorshow this weekend answering questions about the upcoming MotoGP World Championship. The Italian youngster, who welcomes his good friend Valentino Rossi to the factory Yamaha squad in 2004, declared that the reigning World Champion is unlikely to retain his title and cited Honda and Ducati riders as the men most likely to take it away.

"On paper it's the most unsure seasons in recent years," said Melandri, who completed his debut season in the premier-class in 2003 riding the Yamaha M1. "I don't know what will happen to Valentino Rossi, if he'll be able to be competitive. I think the favourites are Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi."

Melandri added that, if Rossi is to be competitive, Yamaha will have to make major advances with the M1 during the winter for the good of both results and rider safety. "This year, we at Yamaha were a bit behind Honda. Our bike is very manageable during slow curves, but for fast curves it becomes unstable. We are working hard to resolve this problem, also because last year there were fifteen falls for this reason, and some of them with serious consequences".
