Losail National Cup gets underway

A new competition designed to unearth motorcycling talent in Qatar has been launched by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation in collaboration with the Losail International Circuit.

The Losail National Cup generated huge interest and almost one hundred people, all aged between 16 and 30 and born in Qatar, applied to enter the first series of tests. Some 62 candidates were given the chance to demonstrate their talent on the track and last week sixteen riders were selected to contest the Cup on Yamaha R6 2005 machines.

Under the watchful eye of experienced Spanish Supersport regulars Iván Silva and Javier del Amor, the riders were given valuable track time on Tuesday and the quickest lap times were dropped by ten seconds, with the six fastest riders all lapping within the 2'31 mark.

The Cup will consist of three rounds and the winner will get the chance to contest the Spanish Championship, which starts on the 8th May.

The first Losail National Cup reflects a growing interest in motorcycle sport in Qatar, which has been boosted by the construction of the country's first premier-class racing venue, which hosted the MotoGP World Championship last October and will continue to do so at least until 2008.
