Melandri still doubtful for Sepang

Marco Melandri's participation in this weekend's Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix is still in doubt after he underwent surgery on the injury he picked up at Motegi last Sunday. The Italian sustained a deep wound to his right foot which was penetrated by a foot-peg after he crashed off following a collision with Valentino Rossi.

Melandri arrived at his team's hotel on Monday night in a wheelchair with 35 stitches in the wound and a badly swollen ankle. The Italian must wait and see how he progresses between now and Saturday, although he aims to make a swift recovery and is looking to take part in the final free practice session on Saturday.

"I had bad luck with the crash. They let me fly on Monday night and to be honest it was a comfortable flight, there were no problems," said Melandri. "Right now the injury doesn't hurt but I know that it will be tough on the bike. Maybe I'll try on Saturday but I have a lot of stitches and the area is still quite swollen. I don't know if I'll have the strength I need to control the bike. Luckily we still have a couple of days to rest and then we'll decide what is the best thing to do."
