Poggiali and Aoyama to spearhead KTM 250cc effort

KTM confirmed its 250cc and 125cc line-up for the 2006 season, with Manuel Poggiali and Hiroshi Aoyama teaming-up to compete under the Austrian manufacturer colours in the quarter-litre category, while Mika Kallio and Julián Simón will aim for the title in the minor class.

125 and 250 World Champion Manuel Poggiali will head back to the 250cc class after a lacklustre campaign with Gilera in the 125cc 2005 World Championship. The San Marinese had clinched his first world title in 2001 on a Gilera designed by Austrian guru Harald Bartol, now the mastermind of KTM's Grand Prix effort.

Hiroshi Aoyama will switch to KTM after spending most of his career on Honda machinery, including his two first seasons in Grand Prix racing as Dani Pedrosa's team-mate. The Japanese took his first Grand Prix win this year at Motegi.

Australian rider Anthony West, who secured KTM's first 250cc podium by taking second in the wet at Donington Park on his debut with the Austrian machine, is under contract with KTM for another season and should be the team's test-rider. However, a spokesperson for the team indicated that he could be released if he was to be offered another ride.

The 250cc outfit will test at Jerez, Spain, from the 28th to the 30th of November, and will head to the Almeria circuit afterwards, where they will be joined by the 125cc team.
