Red Bull Rookies Cup youngsters test in Spain

Continuing their own ‘mini-preseason', the 20 participants taking part in the Red Bull Rookies Cup headed to Jerez this week for testing on their 125cc KTM kit bikes. It was a chance for the boys and girls to get in some experience before the first race for the project at the Spanish Circuit next month.

Along with the new bikes, the youngsters chosen at the end of last year were also provided with leathers by clothing company Alpinestars. Divided into two groups, the riders had two days of testing in which they alternated track time and theory classes.

The test was rounded off with a race simulation, in which the rookies engaged in the customary grid line-up, warm up lap and start that they will have to undertake in 2007, as part of a series running alongside selected MotoGP races.

KTM provided ample experience, in addition to their generous bike donation. 20 mechanics, headed by Heinrich Brandstatter, were sent to Jerez, alongside former 125 and 250cc rider August Auinger. The latter assumes the role of trainer to the Rookies Cup riders, whilst also aiding them in their theoretical preparation.

Red Bull Rookies Cup director Harald Bartol will join up with the project at the next scheduled test, which takes place on the 1st and 2nd of March at Valencia.
