Dovizioso confident ahead of Donington visit

Kopron Team Scot's Andrea Dovizioso is relaxed and focused ahead of the Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix.

After staying on in Barcelona for an important day of testing on his Honda 250cc machinery following the last round of the World Championship, Kopron Team Scot's Andrea Dovizioso is relaxed and focused ahead of the Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix.

Remaining in Catalunya for an extra day proved to be worthwhile for the Italian and his team, with some improved lap times the reward for their hard work and a good confidence boost as 2006's 250cc World Championship runner-up arrives in England for the eighth round of the season.

"Donington is a track that I quite like, last year I was only sixth and this time I want to do better," explains Dovizioso. "The track is fast, with some hard braking, a point on which I hope to face up to the Aprilia riders and now we'll also see if here we can feel the engine difference. At the Barcelona test last week we had good lap times, with a better pace compared with the race, so I'm confident and positive for this weekend."

With World Champion Jorge Lorenzo making such a dominant start to his 250cc title defence having amassed 153 points from a possible 175 in the seven races so far this year, Dovizioso's own consistent continuation of his 2006 form has been admirable but only enough to earn him 117 points - meaning a title challenge may already be beyond him.

But the Kopron Team Scot rider will aim to keep picking up points and hope for a change in Lorenzo's fortunes this weekend at a track where he set a new lap record while battling for the lead last year but eventually finished sixth after sliding off at the hairpin on lap 17 and then remounting his machine.

That race was won by Lorenzo, but Dovizioso himself has tasted glory on English soil before, having won the 125cc race at Donington from pole position in 2004 on his way to taking the world title.

Since moving up to the 250cc class at the start of 2005 as the 125 champion Dovizioso has only missed finishing in a point scoring position on one occasion, at the Malaysian Grand Prix of 2005 when he crashed on the first lap of the race. Mr Consistency of the quarter litre class has therefore since scored points at the last 27 successive races.
