Cluzel aims for privateer prize

Fresh from his first podium, Matteoni man targets further success.

Frenchman Jules Cluzel is unlikely to have been amongst the favoured picks for a podium finish in Qatar, but the Matteoni Racing man did just that on Sunday evening at the Losail International Circuit.

Cluzel took a praiseworthy second place to make his podium debut, and put the result down to some hard work between Saturday evening and the Sunday race.

“It was an incredible weekend, and a good omen for the rest of the year,” said Cluzel in the week following his runner-up finish. “In the test at Qatar we weren’t in good shape, and in the last 15 minutes of qualifying I slipped down to thirteenth place and 1.4 seconds off pole, so we had to work hard after that. Analysing the telemetry certainly paid off, and you could see in the warmup that we had improved.”

Stating that he had made the mature decision of bringing the bike home after seeing victor Héctor Barberá escape his clutches, the French privateer then set out his goal for the rest of the year.

“Let’s not forget that I’m starting again in 250cc, and I have to get to know the bike. We’ll have harder weekends, but we will have to just keep working to have good races, without crashing. I think that it is possible to be in the top ten every race, and then be Privateer of the Year. Also, why shouldn’t I aim for another result like this one?”
