Kart race kicks off Sachsenring weekend

Mini race won by 250cc substitute rider Aleix Espargaró.

The Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland weekend began as it will end on Thursday afternoon, as MotoGP riders did battle in a race to the chequered flag at the Sachsenring circuit. The premier class race will, of course, take place on Sunday afternoon, but the opportunity to hone their racing instincts in a kart competition held at the circuit complex was the order of the day in the traditional pre-event schedule.

MotoGP riders Marco Melandri, Andrea Dovizioso, Niccolò Canepa and Alex de Angelis were the headlining riders in the karting contest, split into three groups to include 125cc and 250cc stars plus DSF MotoGP television presenter (and former home rider) Katja Poensgen. Absent from proceedings this year was Casey Stoner, who normally cleans up in the good natured competition that quickly –and inevitably- turns competitive.

The race between the top qualifiers from the three groups was won by Balatonring substitute rider Aleix Espargaró, with Álvaro Bautista and Dovizioso completing the podium.
