Espargaró causes surprise in early session

Spanish youngster Pol Espargaró was the top rider in Saturday morning’s first FP2 session at Brno.

The opening practice of the morning at the Cardion ab Czech Republic Grand Prix on Saturday concluded with Derbi Racing’s Pol Espargaró lapping in front of his fellow 125cc competitors, courtesy of a best effort of 2’08.387, as the riders upped the pace from Friday.

It was a hot lap right at the end of the session from the Derbi rider, who comes from just outside Barcelona, and the time was more than 0.3s quicker than the second best rider - Bancaja Aspar’s Julián Simón.

Simón is aiming to make it three wins in three Grands Prix this weekend, as he seeks to increase his considerable 50 point championship lead, but he will have the likes of team-mates Bradley Smith and Sergio Gadea snapping at his heels, that pair lapping third and seventh fastest respectively in FP2.

Also hoping to be back in the podium hunt at Brno will be Nico Terol (Jack & Jones Team) and Andrea Iannone (Ongetta Team I.S.P.A.) who were fourth and sixth, sandwiching fifth placed Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing), all three lapping within a second of Espargaró.

Joan Olivé, Espargaró’s more experienced team-mate, along with German pair Sandro Cortese (Ajo Interwetten) and Jonas Folger (Ongetta Team I.S.P.A.) also featured in the top ten.
