Fiat Yamaha team divided by the Champions League

Fiat Yamaha team divided by the Champions League

Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, fans of Internazionale Milan and FC Barcelona respectively, will enjoy a preview of their battle at Jerez at the weekend when their football teams meet this evening in the European Cup semi-final.

The Gran Premio bwin de España at Jerez will be on the mind of every MotoGP rider as the weekend fast approaches, but for this evening Fiat Yamaha team-mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will have another sporting matter on their agendas. The World Champion and the 2009 runner-up, who secured a one-two in the opening race of the season in Qatar, will be in direct competition as the football teams they support – Internazionale Milan and FC Barcelona – meet in the semi-final of the Champions League at Camp Nou.

Lorenzo’s passion for the reigning European champions has been displayed on many occasions before, notably last season when he sported a special helmet and leathers which were dedicated to Barca’s achievement of claiming the ‘treble’. Rossi’s allegiance to Italian reigning champions Inter has also been well documented down the years.

In the case of Lorenzo his presence inside the stadium is virtually guaranteed, whilst Rossi is likely to watch the encounter from his home in Italy before travelling to Jerez on Thursday where he will attend the pre-event press conference, alongside his team-mate and rival.

At the moment both duels seem to lie in Rossi’s favour, with a five-point advantage over Lorenzo in the early World Championship standings after round one in Qatar and Inter holding a 3-1 lead over Barca after the first leg last week. It now remains to be seen how these aspects could alter over the coming days…
