Double win for Gagne in Red Bull Rookies Cup

Double win for Gagne in Red Bull Rookies Cup

The 16 year-old American won both races at Sachsenring as he took the lead in the Red Bull Rookies Cup standings.

Jake Gagne raced from pole position to a perfect win in race one on Saturday, but it was not an easy win for the 16 year-old American who crossed the line ahead of 14 year-old South African Brad Binder and 16 year-old Brit Danny Kent.

There were 10 riders competing for the victory towards the end of the 19-lap contest, but it was Gagne who had the extra edge. Binder rode a fine race to rise from the third row to take second place, and Kent was another who had to work hard for his place on the rostrum coming from 10th on the grid thanks to a good start.

Alex Kristiansson, the 16 year-old Swede, missed out on a podium place by just seven-thousandths of a second but had the consolation of a new lap record, with 15 year-old Italian Kevin Calia fifth. Australian 17 year-old Josh Hook took sixth having started from the fourth row of the grid, finishing just ahead of 18 year-old Spaniard Daniel Ruiz.

Harry Stafford crashed out of the lead group on lap seven, Alessio Cappella fell on lap 10 and Daijiro Hiura only scored a single point after rejoining the race following a high speed off-track excursion. All were unhurt as was Alejandro Pardo who was knocked off at the first corner going on to lap nine, and the Italian eventually placed 17th.

Gagne was again victorious in race two on Sunday, with Binder also repeating his second position and Hiura making up for Saturday’s disappointment with third.

“I was pretty confident I could do it again,” said Gagne. “It was a good race yesterday and there was no reason why it should be different. At one point Brad and I got away from the others a bit but I wasn't too surprised when they closed back up again. Then it was all one group and I pretty much played it like yesterday and managed to get away just before the end.”

Kent crashed but remounted his machine to finish 12th, and Ruiz also had a fall on lap one which involved Calia, both failing to finish the race. Pardo took fourth thanks to a pass on the last corner on 16 year-old Czech Tomas Vavrous, with Kristiansson sixth.

After the two Sachsenring races Gagne leads the standings on 117 points, Kent is second on 103, with Ruiz third on 93. Hiura (89) and Binder (87) are close behind in fourth and fifth respectively.

The next Rookies Cup races are on August 14th and 15th as part of the Cardio nab Grand Prix Czech Republic at Brno, with a single race to conclude the season at Misano on September 4th.
