Salom narrows championship gap with San Marino podium

With his seventh podium finish of the season last weekend in Misano, RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom has closed in on the leaders of the Moto3™ championship.

Salom finished the GP Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini in second place behind leader Sandro Cortese, cutting the deficit to second-placed Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales to only ten points with five races remaining.

Salom was once again involved in a tough battle with Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese. The race went down to the wire with three laps remaining, and Viñales, who had had a bad start, closed in on the leading group. With five riders close to each other and changing positions in every corner they entered the final lap neck-and-neck. Cortese managed to get away just far enough to prevent Salom from beating him, although the Spaniard only missed out by a small margin.

Luis Salom

"It was a very hard race. There were too many riders remaining in the group to have a decent fight. It was too close. It’s a pity I couldn’t take Cortese. He was very quick in the last lap and just too far away to try. I am happy with the result, especially for my team and for Kalex and KTM. They have worked very hard to give me the best bike.’’

Johan Stigefelt, Team Manager

"I don’t know if Luis could have won the race. Cortese was very strong today. But we are getting closer to second in the championship and that is great. We have a clear sight at our goal for the final rounds of the season.’
