Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese gave his Moto3™ title hopes a significant boost last weekend by taking victory in Misano.
The German stalked Italian favourite Romano Fenati for the majority of the race, before pouncing three laps before the end. It was however no easy cruise home to the line, as other title-contender Maverick Viñales tried to push his way past Cortese on the final lap. Yet the German kept his cool and managed to fend off the advances to take the chequered flag in front of Luis Salom and Fenati. With his third victory and 11th podium of the season, Cortese earned himself a 46-point lead at the top of the championship standings over Viñales.
“One of my best victories, but at the same time also one of my hardest races. During the last two laps I gave 200 % of myself because the last half of the lap is easier to ride alone than within the group of five. It was occasionally hard to keep my concentration because I knew that Maverick was coming fast behind me.”
Aki Ajo, Team Manager
“We have now a nice championship lead but we don´t dare to say yet that we are safe. In the future we have to be careful, stay relaxed and ride sensibly according to all the current situations.”
