Lorenzo pips Pedrosa in opening Jerez practice

Jorge Lorenzo has led the first practice session ahead of the Gran Premio bwin de España. The reigning MotoGP™ World Champion moved ahead of Dani Pedrosa on his final lap, beating his compatriot by the narrow margin of three thousandths of a second. Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi completed the top three.

As members of the MotoGP community headed into the Circuito of Jerez this morning, a few spots of rain did fall, although the sun was beginning to shine by the time the opening practice period had drawn to a close. After the ‘flyaway’ races of Qatar and Texas, Jerez is the first European venue of the season.

Repsol Honda Team’s Pedrosa – pushing hard for a first race victory of the campaign – topped the timesheets for much of the session, but was demoted to second courtesy of Lorenzo’s last-gasp lap of 1’39.701 on the Yamaha Factory Racing machine. Third-placed Rossi, like Pedrosa, is also highly determined for a positive weekend.

Having received widespread praise for his performance in the United States last time out, Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow was fourth quickest this morning and ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez who is contesting a premier class Grand Prix at home in Spain for the first time.

Ducati Team is running test rider Michele Pirro as a wildcard, with Andrea Iannone the only representative for Pramac Racing as teammate Ben Spies recovers, having suffered chest pains in Texas due to a trapped nerve. Another man in discomfort is Cardion AB Motoracing’s Karel Abraham, riding with a broken right collarbone as a consequence of his Qualifying crash in America.

Having racked up much mileage at Jerez in pre-season testing, Nicky Hayden finished sixth for Ducati Team. Stefan Bradl and LCR Honda MotoGP were next up, ahead of GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista and leading CRT runner Aleix Espargaro of Power Electronics Aspar. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso completed the top ten.

The second practice session commences at 2:05pm local time (GMT +2).
