Bautista thrilled with first front row of 2013

Alvaro Bautista will start third on the grid for Sunday’s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, marking his first front row position since clinching pole at Silverstone last year.

The GO&FUN Honda Gresini rider admits to being slightly surprised by Saturday’s result at Laguna Seca, not least after struggling at the Californian venue last year.

“I am so happy, it’s so good for us,” the Spaniard began. “I don’t know what happened, exactly, because we haven’t changed too much from the last race. After the (first-lap) crash in Barcelona, I have gone step-by-step and not wanting to do too much. At the Sachsenring we did well and here, from the first practice, I have felt very comfortable riding the bike.

“I’m especially happy because I remember last year at this track was terrible; I had a lot of problems and it was very difficult for me to ride. This year it seems like another track. We did well in qualifying and I was able to get third place and start from the front row tomorrow, but I’m especially happy because we have good pace for the race.”

Bautista highlights the possible perils of the opening laps on Sunday:

“We’ll try to make a good start and then be careful on the first lap because, with the cold air here, the tyres need a few laps to build up temperature, so it’s about building up temperature at the beginning of the race and then finding a rhythm.”

Since stepping up to the MotoGP™ class in 2010, Bautista has now started on the front row on three occasions. His previous qualifying best in 2013 was fourth, achieved at the Catalan GP in mid-June.
