Marquez all smiles as he leads on Day 1

Friday may have marked the first time Marc Marquez had taken to the infamous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on MotoGP™ machinery, but the Repsol Honda Team rider demonstrated great confidence as he topped the timesheets.

The rookie’s session-topping time of 1’22.040 led LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl by two tenths of a second, while closest championship rivals Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) and Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) finished in respective 11th and sixth positions.

“I felt good on the bike immediately,” said the winner of last weekend’s German Grand Prix. “In the afternoon, the track conditions were much better than in the morning. After FP1 we soon realized that we had to improve in some areas and we then took a step forward in FP2.

“I’ve been getting quicker and quicker; perhaps grip levels are not quite the same as last year, but we are doing well and I hope we can carry on like this tomorrow.”

Marquez was not the only rider making a circuit debut on Friday, as Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Michael Laverty (PBM), Lukas Pesek (Came IodaRacing Project), Bryan Staring (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Claudio Corti (NGM Mobile Forward Racing) also had a first taste of the anti-clockwise Laguna Seca, which is the shortest circuit on the MotoGP™ calendar.
