Bayliss on Marquez: ‘It is incredible what he is doing on the bike’

Former MotoGP™ World Championship rider and WSBK World Champion Troy Bayliss is attending the Tissot Australian Grand Prix this weekend at Phillip Island.

A proud Australian, Bayliss rode in Grand Prix full time from 2003 to 2005, also making a brilliant single cameo appearance at Valencia in 2006 where he won the race for Ducati.

He spoke to motogp.com on Friday, recalling his days in GP and stating, “Things haven’t changed so much. I think the riders have just taken it to another level. When I’m here (in the paddock) I just see so many of the people that I used to know and it feels like nothing has changed!”

Bayliss is a keen dirt track and supermotard rider and continues to enjoy riding. He hosts and competes in events in Australia and has accepted the invitation to ride in the Barcelona Superprestigio dirt track event this winter, which is likely to be attended by many current MotoGP World Championship participants.

The former GP competitor explained, “We have the Troy Baylisss classic which is in January and we are trying to lift the level of dirt track or flat track in Australia. Now with the likes of Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi heavily involved in dirt track a lot of the riders are starting to get into it. So I’ve accepted the offer to race in Barcelona at the Superprestigio. It will be good for me to go and do and to be part of the event. Because it’s the second year of the event and I’m sure it will be even stronger. I’m doing it to try and lift the level here in Australia.”

Bayliss will arrive in Spain advance of the Superprestigio event and it is expected that he will get a chance to spend some preparation time training with double MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez, who is also a keen dirt tracker.

Bayliss added, “I don’t know Marc very well, he is a busy man! But I’m sure I’ll get to know him when we do some practice. Marc and his brother they seem like the most happy people in the paddock. He is just so young and full of energy. It is incredible what he is doing on the bike, that’s for sure.”
