Giacomo Guidotti: "We expect a lot from Yonny Hernandez"

Giacomo Guidotti: 'We expect a lot from Yonny Hernandez'

With only a few weeks to go until MotoGP™ testing begins in Sepang, Yonny Hernandez’s Pramac Ducati Crew Chief Giacomo Guidotti talks about the 2014 season, as well as what he’s expecting from the Colombian this year.

Commenting on last season, Guidotti said: “Day after day Yonny showed steady growth, highlighting how big his potential is. During the race weekend in Barcelona, where he was constantly among the top riders, we finally realized his talent. Maybe it's because Barcelona is a good circuit for Yonny, but we expect him to be able to keep that level in every Grand Prix.”

Hernandez’s prowess in the wet was something that his Italian crew chief singled out in particular: “This has to be analysed in depth. It’s true that in the wet is one of the fastest. Maybe it’s his sensitivity on the bike, or perhaps his riding style benefits from low grip. But the numbers also show that he’s never achieved what he’s capable of. Yonny is fast in the wet, but he has to capitalize this.”

Following the 2014 season, where Hernandez was the sole satellite rider on the Ducati GP13, he has been rewarded for his efforts with a GP14.2, which is the bike now-factory rider Andrea Iannone finished the season on. Hernandez already had some time on the bike at the post-Valencia test last November.

“The switch to the 14.2 was positive, but we haven’t had much time to explore it in depth. The little time that we had available was used mainly for ergonomics rather than performance”, Guidotti said. Yet looking towards the first Sepang test, he added: “The primary goal is to build a bike-rider relationship as quickly as possible in order to optimize our performance…Yonny must absorb a lot of info in a short period of time. The bike is undoubtedly better than the one he finished last season with, yet will start with the settings of Valencia, and then work on the software to study the technical innovations Ducati will provide. Sepang 2 is when we will look at lap times.”
