The Drive M7 SIC Racing Team continued to make headway at the Circuito de Jerez today, despite a second day of intermittent rain.
Undeterred by the conditions, Jakub Kornfeil took to the track to test the wet set up on his #84 KTM Moto3 machine for the very first time. Getting straight up to speed, Kornfeil finished the morning session in sixth place and as the leading KTM rider. As the heavens opened for the final session, the Czech rider continued to impress, temporarily topping the timesheet, before concluding the day in second place.
Teammate Zulfahmi Khairuddin also made progress on his #63 bike. Choosing to wait out for a drying track, Khairuddin immediately got to work in session two, improving his lap time from yesterday and taking full advantage of a dry line, before rain once again put a halt to proceedings. The final session of the day saw a more challenging time for Khairuddin, after a small crash in the wet saw him loose valuable time on track to work on his set-up and better his time.
“Today was again very strange weather. In the morning the track started off 50% wet and 50% dry, so we went out on the wet tyre; however towards the end it was drying out more and so it completely destroyed the rain tyre. - We finished sixth which was not so bad. In the second session it was dry but we chose to start with an old tyre and I could not go faster. Unfortunately when we changed the tyre it started to rain and then nobody could improve, so this is why we didn’t do as well in this session. In the end it was raining heavily, which was perfect as we had a full wet session. There were a lot more riders going out at the end of the day, so it was an ideal time to test our wet set-up properly, which was what we wanted. Finally we did a great job. I have to say thanks to my team; we set-up the bike for the wet very well and I felt good. Still we have to work on the electronics as we have a couple of things to improve, but when we have done this I am confident that we can again be faster. Overall I think today was a positive day; we had more time on track and were able to test more things. Again we understand the bike a little bit more which is perfect because this is testing and this is why we do it, so we have to be happy. We also we finished second in last session in the wet conditions, so this was a very good end to the day.”
“We didn’t go out in the first practice today because the track was half wet and half dry. We could see the sun was coming, so we chose to wait for it to dry up so that we could continue working on our base set up here. In the second session there was a dry line; we went straight out and I was able to improve my lap time from yesterday, which I am happy about. We didn’t get as long as we would have liked because then the rain came, so we still have some work to do to continue our progress. In the final session of the day it was raining heavily and unfortunately I had a small crash on lap two. I was only able to do nine laps in total but from this we now know what we have to do with the bike. I hope that tomorrow the weather will be more consistent and we can get more time on track.”
