Jakub Kornfeil ended the first two sessions on top of the timesheets, on the final day of preseason testing in the rain at Jerez.
After temperatures of 11 degrees, strong winds and heavy rain had greeted the Moto3™ paddock as it arrived at the circuit, a number of teams decided not to take any risks and didn’t head out onto the 4.4 km Circuito de Jerez. To highlight just how tricky conditions were, Ana Carrasco suffered a crash and, after being taken to the Medical Centre, it was revealed the RBA Racing Team rider had unfortunately broken her collarbone.
Of the riders that did take to the track, Drive M7 SIC Racing’s Jakub Kornfeil was the most impressive in the wet conditions, as he headed both of the first two sessions. His best time of 1’59.870, set in the morning, 0.179s ahead of class rookie Jorge Martin on the Mapfre Mahindra bike in 2nd.
Ongetta-Rivacold’s Niccolo Antonelli was 3rd fastest (+0.444s), as he finished just ahead of the two factory Red Bull KTM Ajo bikes, with Karel Hanika beating his teammate, Brad Binder, into 4th place by just 0.207s.
Completing the top six was Martin’s teammate on the other Mapfre Mahindra machine, Francesco Bagnaia, 0.958s behind the leader.
