Atiratphuvapat takes pole in Qatar

Atiratphuvapat takes pole in Qatar

He headed a session in which nine riders were below the best lap achieved in Losail last year during the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup.

Thai rider Nakarin Atiratphuvapat set the fastest time in qualifying held on Friday at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. The man who won the second race at the first round in Buriram (Thailand), set his time at the end of the session, with Japanese rider Sasaki and Indonesian Izdihar completing the front row.

The 22 riders of the cup had two free practice sessions around the 5.4 km circuit, the first on Thursday, and the second this morning, with Malaysian rider Rasol setting the fastest time. In the second session Australian Lachlan Taylor crashed, fracturing a finger in his left hand, which prevented him from taking part in Qualifying and he is doubtful for the two races this weekend.

The results indicate that the two races this weekend will follow the trend set in Buriram just one week ago, when a group of 9-10 riders battled it for the race win until the very last corner. Atiratphuvapat was 0.361s ahead of the 2nd placed Sasaki, with Izdihar 0.648s off from the pole sitter in 3rd, with the next six riders separated by just half a second. The pace this year has been very good, with nine riders going under the pole time set last year by Kaito Toba.

Alberto Puig, Director of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup, appeared extremely satisfied with the performance of the riders: “The first two have achieved an excellent time, setting a 2'10 is very good considering they are running completely standard Moto3 bikes. They are a little above the rest, but there are a few riders under the 2’11 mark. That's what we want, for them to work hard, and to be able to ride fast. The conditions were good, but lowering the record for the pole by 1.5s is very positive.”

The schedule for the races this weekend is:

Saturday 28 March:   Race 1 (14 laps) 16:00 (GMT +3)

Sunday 29 March:      Race 2 (14 laps) 13:50 (GMT +3)
