Simeon: “Now we know that we are competitive”

Xavier Simeon produced a stunning performance to claim second place in the opening race of the Moto2™ World Championship Qatar.

The 25-year-old Belgian rider, who launched started from the second row of the grid, took 2nd after Sam Lowes had earlier crashed out, and Johann Zarco experience gearbox problems.

Xavier Simeon:
“After good practice sessions we knew we could keep a good race pace: in the first laps I was fast, but Lowes and Zarco still managed to open a gap. So I tried to chase Folger in front of me, but I did some small mistakes and Jonas also took a little gap. Towards the end of the race, when I saw that it was impossible to reach him and that I was 5 seconds ahead of the pack behind me, I started to save the tyres as I was starting to feel some chattering on the front end and I didn’t want to repeat mistakes I’ve already made some times in the past. I dedicate this podium to my girlfriend’s mother, who passed away recently, we really miss her; I’m very happy to give this second place to Federal Oil and to all the team: everyone is working hard to be successful and although we knew after the winter tests that we have reached a good level, we also knew that the race is always another story. Now we know that we are competitive and we want to continue to work to further improve some aspect in order to fight for the victory even without the withdrawal of the fastest”.

Fausto Gresini:
“We knew we could have a good race, but honestly this second place comes unexpected: it’s true that things went easier with the mistakes of other riders, but we have nevertheless proved to be very competitive and that we have taken a big step forward compared to last year. This placement is a nice boost of confidence for the future: congratulations to Xavier and to the whole team. Now we look forward to the next race!”.
