Pramac Racing’s Team Manager Francesco Guidotti reflects on his teams performance in Qatar, and looks ahead to the next round in Austin.
It was an encouraging start to the 2015 season for Pramac Racing, with both Yonny Hernandez and Danilo Petrucci making it through to Q2, and going on to finish in 10th and 12th respectively during the race in Qatar. Guidotti was happy with his teams performance: “The evaluation is surely positive, during the qualifying we went beyond any expectation by reaching the second row with Yonny and that made us celebrate. In Q2 he started well, even though he had a small problem under braking at the first corner, but we have to say that he was alone and had no reference points. Probably he could have done better but it’s ok. The race went more or less like we expected it to go. Unfortunately we lost two positions over the last three laps. But this should be an incentive to do better next time. We are not far from competing at the front and the race went very well”.
Although he added they still have some work to do on finding Yonny’s perfect race setup: “We have to work on the right adjustments with the GP14.2 because Yonny doesn’t know it perfectly yet. When he gets back to the pit box after a test run he is not able to provide perfect information and this doesn’t help us with the set up. The tire wear during the race is due to this aspect besides the fact that Yonny pushed hard during the first laps in order to stay ahead.”
He went onto discuss Petrucci’s debut for the team: “Danilo always tends to be unsatisfied but he should remember this weekend with a big smile. During the free practises he didn’t shine, that’s true, but still he didn’t do bad. Probably he missed something in the end due to a tire which was not that ok. But when he raced alone during the Q1 he had excellent times. Big riders were behind him that moment and this should make him very proud. Then the Grand Prix: that was the first time he raced with the GP14 and finishing it was important because only by going through the whole race, by facing all the problems he could have had lap after lap, would have been good for him in order to gain experience and extra information. The 12th position at the end of the race is ok, because that means he is close to the Top 10. A great experience that will make us all improve. From Austin on everyone will see interesting and good things.”
Finally, Guidotti was pleased to see three Italians on the podium at round one: “Seeing 3 Italian guys in the first 3 positions is always great. It is not the first time that we see something like that happen, to be honest it was’t that unusual some years ago. So it feels great to see it happen again. Especially when on the podium you can see two Ducati riders. That’s a big satisfaction because it means that Gigi Dall’Igna’s project is already extremely competitive. Probably we will benefit from it as well but we shouldn’t think about it now. We have to stick to our schedule and let the Ducati engineers work since they are doing a great job; they have managed to make the new GP15 competitive in record time.”
