Niccolo Antonelli showed off his prowess in the wet during the first Moto3™ Free Practice session at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas
The session was delayed for 50 minutes, but when it did get underway it was declared a wet session. Riders took to the track immediately as the pit lane opened to gain some usual information for their teams ahead of what could also be a wet race on Sunday, with rain predicted for the most of the weekend.
Antonelli, on the Ongetta-Rivacold Honda set a blistering pace late on in the session as riders continued to adjust to the conditions with a 2’31.668. He was the only rider to make it under the 2’32 mark, with Leopard Racing’s Danny Kent (+0.880s) almost a second further back in 2nd place.
Andrea Locatelli (+2.131s) on the Gresini Racing Team Moto3 Honda finished 3rd fastest, with Kent’s teammate Efren Vazquez (+2.563s) in 4th. The two Drive M7 SIC KTM’s were up next, with Zulfahmi Khairuddin (+2.776s) and Jakub Kornfeil (+3.014s) in 5th and 6th place respectively.
