Marquez back on top during vital FP3

Marquez back on top during vital FP3

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez topped FP3 in Argentina as Smith, Hernandez, and Pol Espargaro are left to battle it out in Q1.

Sunshine and a track temperature of 27 degrees greeted the MotoGP™ riders for FP3, with the top ten riders on the combined timesheets making it through to the second Qualifying session automatically. The rest will have to fight it out in Q1 for the top two spots in an effort to qualify for Q2.

A number of riders used the early part of the session to perfect their setups on the harder option tyre, with one eye on the race on Sunday, and to get used to the changing grip levels at the circuit. During this period none of the top ten riders improved their pace from FP2. In the final 10 minutes, most came in to swap to their softer option rear tyre, and a manic end to the session followed as riders tried to ensure their participation in Q2.

It was the reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Marc Marquez who ended the session on top, with a 1’38.602, on his first flying lap toward the end of the session. CWM LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow (+0.056s) finished in an incredible 2nd place, considering he missed the inaugural race at the circuit last year through injury, with Aleix Espargaro (+0.174s) on the Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-RR rounding out the provisional front row.

Andrea Iannone (+0.189s) on the Ducati Team GP15 was in 4th, in front of his teammate Dovizioso (+0.216s), and the two Movistar Yamaha’s of Jorge Lorenzo (+0.350s) and Valentino Rossi (+0.417s).

Also making it through to Q2 are Pramac Racing’s Danilo Petrucci, Maverick Viñales on the second Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-RR, and Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Racing’s Scott Redding.

The riders that will have to battle it out in Q1 include both the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike's of Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, and Yonny Hernandez on the other Pramac Racing Ducati.

Winning the battle for the leading Open class bike was Aspar MotoGP Team’s Eugene Laverty, who at one point was up into 4th with just moments to go in the session, but finished in 12th.
