Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) topped Warm Up at Sepang, just beating freshly crowned World Champion Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) to the top. Rookie of the Year Francesco Bagnaia (Sky Racing Team VR46) was third quickest as the day began dry.

- World Champion Franco Morbidelli has qualified on pole position for the sixth time of his career so far, which is his 13th front row start of the season. He is the first rider to achieve that since Johann Zarco back in 2015, the fifth overall in Moto2™. Title rival Tom Lüthi was declared unfit before the race, confirming Morbidelli as Champion.
- Morbidelli is the last rider who has won from pole position in Moto2™; it was in Sachsenring earlier this year. From his five pole position this year he has only failed to win the race once, in Italy. He crossed the line in second last year at Sepang.
- Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) has qualified in second place on the grid for his first appearance in the Moto2™ class at Sepang, his fifth front row start in this class.
- Pons HP 40 rider Fabio Quartararo has qualified in third place on the grid, his best qualifying result of his rookie season in Moto2™ and his fifth front row start of his Grand Prix career so far. He crossed the line in fourth last year in Moto3™ at Sepang.
- EG 0,0 Marc VDS rider Álex Márquez will head the second row of the grid, which is the second successive time he failed to qualify on the front row, the first time this year.
- Rookie of the Year Francesco Bagnaia will start on the second row of the grid. He won the Moto3™ race last year at Sepang; this is the last victory for Mahindra-powered machinery rider in Moto3™.
