Smith: “I’m a little bit disappointed'

A tricky start to Smith’s Qualifying as the British rider was lucky to stay on his Yamaha, smashing the front screen as it bucked at Turn 12

Starting from ninth on the grid is not the result that Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) had hoped for, but he’s optimistic for the race. FP3 had shown a lot of promise for Smith, ending the pre-Qualifying session fifth fastest. Smith carried his enthusiasm and pace through to Q2, pushing hard from the off. Sadly a moment, accompanied by an impressive save, at Turn 12 forced the Tech 3 rider back to the pits for repairs thus limiting his track time.

Regardless, the determined Brit returned to the track as soon as possible and set a 1’21.329 on his penultimate lap. This saw him end the session at the back of the third row in ninth, just over a tenth off a second row start. Starting in ninth does offer one advantage: the inside line and with Turn 1 being so tight this could allow Smith to make up several position. Smith has a growing reputation as the best starter in MotoGP™, no doubt he’ll be there into the first corner.

Bradley Smith: "Overall, I am optimistic for the race tomorrow, despite the fact that I’m a little bit disappointed with my final qualifying position today. The slide that I had on my bike during my first flying lap affected our qualifying quite a bit. I didn’t take full advantage of the first set of tyres and then I was too nervous on the second pair, especially on my final lap where I lost a lot of time in the last sector due to this. Therefore, I’m a bit dissatisfied as my objective today was to qualify on the front two rows and even though we are not too far back from there, we are 9th and not 6th. However, to be starting on the inside of the track might be an advantage here. In addition, I have a good race pace and am confident with the bike and even though it will be a tricky event as the tyres drop quite a lot here, I am ready for a good challenge."
