Bastianini: “I managed to win the sprint for the podium'

A photo finish saw Bastianini snatch third in an all-Italian battle at the GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.

Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) was one of the riders hit by a Qualifying penalty for being slow near the racing line, demoting him from second to fifth on the starting grid. In past races the Italian has made up deficits much greater than this so he was not worried when he went to line up. Danny Kent and Efren Vazquez (Leopard Racing) broke away and were took a dominant 1-2 on the podium.

However, the battle for third lasted down to the line. In classic Moto3™ style there was a large group battling for the final step on the podium and it came down to a drag to the line between Romano Fenati (SKY Racing Team VR46), Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) and Bastianini. The Gresini rider has frequently lost out when similar situations have arisen, fortunately today he got he drive and came in ahead of his compatriots. This further cements Bastianini’s third in the championship, now 22 points ahead of Oliveira.

Enea Bastianini: “This third place is really important for the championship and gives me a confidence boost, because I managed to win the sprint for the podium at the finish line: so far we have always been a bit unlucky in the final sprints, but this time I was able to exit the last corner faster than Fenati and it was a great satisfaction to beat him. It was a very difficult race: maybe without the battle with Hanika, which slowed me down a bit, I could probably try to stay with Vazquez to fight for second place: when Efren was still close enough to catch him, I took the lead of the group and tried to push, but the tyres were already worn out and it was not possible to open a gap. We are halfway through the season now and it’s very nice to be still in second place in the Championship: my goal for this season was to try to stay in the top three and we are doing it right!”
