Vazquez: “I went very ambitious into the weekend”

A return to the podium for Vazquez after a DNF last time out in Assen as he helps to secure a 1-2 for Leopard Racing.

Qualifying saw a large number of grid penalties handed out in the Moto3™ field, boosting Vazquez (Leopard Racing) up on the grid. The Honda mounted rider took advantage of this and made a flying start, immediately throwing himself into the mix at Turn One as he battled with teammate Danny Kent and the Red Bull KTM Ajo duo of Brad Binder and Karel Hanika. Vazquez and Kent eventually broke away, but the Basque rider knew he would not be able to match Kent who had been half a second faster than everyone on the Moto3™ grid the entire weekend.

Just a few laps behind his teammate pulled Vazquez along enough to open up a comfortable margin to secure second, his fourth podium of the season. 2015 has been a mixed season for Vazquez; each race he has finished has been inside the top five, but three crashes see him down the order. With 96 points the Leopard Racing rider is fifth, but 94-behind Kent. Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) sits third with 102 points, a realistic aim for Vazquez towards the end of the season.

Efren Vazquez: “Yes, I think it was a good race but not only for me as well for my team, because it’s their home race. I went very ambitious into the weekend to give my crew a really good result. During the race Danny was able to run a really high rhythm, which he had shown already on practice days. I was looking to the TV screens sometimes and I could see one rider is moving away so it looks easy to do it the same way, but it isn’t easy to lap faultless especially at this track.”

“I lost my concentration during two laps so it was a really hard race for me. Finally this podium and beyond that this 20 points are really important for me, foremost for my position in the championship as well as to come back after the summer break in a good mood and with a strong mentality. But for now I look forward to some weeks off to recharge my batteries for the second part of the season. Thanks to the team for their great job every time.”
