Iannone: “A soft rear tyre here did not help us as much”

Iannone: “A soft rear tyre here did not help us as much”

Another strong result from Iannone who heads the second row at the bwin Grand Prix České republiky.

This weekend Ducati have brought a new fairing as well as a revised engine for Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) and Andrea Dovizioso in Brno. The upgrades provided small improvements as Ducati seek their early season form which saw them take three podiums in the first three races. Recent rounds have seen Iannone quietly go about his business, regularly inside the top five and just off the pace of the three riders battling for the championship.

For Sunday’s MotoGP™ World Championship race at the Brno circuit, Iannone will line up in fourth. His time of 1’55.390 was just 0.037s shy of the front row, a narrow disappointment. Many have declared Ducati have an unfair advantage thanks to their access to the soft tyre, but Iannone does not feel this is the case. The Italian won the 2011 Moto2™ race in the Czech Republic and is confident his race pace will allow him to reduce the gap to the race winner come race day. Previous rounds have seen Iannone 20 seconds behind the race winner, a gap he and Ducati are eager to close.

Andrea Iannone: “I would clearly have loved to be on the front row, but I am in any case pleased with how today went. It would have been hard to improve on my best time because I pushed really hard and was on the limit, but in any case I tried to give everything that I could. The use of a soft rear tyre here did not help us as much as you would think and it’s not actually that much of an advantage. Now it will be important to find a few tenths here and there to improve on our race pace, which is however already good if you compare it to the last few rounds. For this reason I would like to thank all the guys in the team and the engineers: here we are suffering a lot less, and we must continue to work to arrive as close as possible to the top men and put them under pressure!”
