Marquez: “The Championship is getting further away”

Marquez: “The Championship is getting further away”

The British GP saw Marc Marquez’s title hopes slip away, but he remains positive as the paddock head to the San Marino Grand Prix.

A fall while chasing Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) at the British GP not only ended Marc Marquez’s race, but also pushed his title hopes even further out of reach. The Repsol Honda rider remains positive, pleased to have been fighting towards the front once again. Unfortunately the crash means Marquez is only nine points ahead of Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) in the MotoGP™ World Championship standings and will have to be careful as the Ducati rider will be on home ground in Misano. Another mistake and Marquez may see himself slip outside the top three in championship standings.

The Misano circuit has recently been resurfaced and has been at the centre of many discussions in the lead up to the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini. Honda participated in a test before the summer break at the track and will be looking to use the data gathered there to gain an advantage over several of their rivals who have not tested on the new surface. Last year’s race saw Marquez crash while chasing Rossi, Misano is one of just three tracks currently on the calendar where the Honda rider has not claimed a premier class victory.

Marc Marquez: “Obviously I’m disappointed to have crashed out of the race in the UK, but I was pushing and this can happen when the weather is like that. Of course the Championship is getting further away from us but we were back fighting at the front and this is definitely a positive. Now we head to Misano which is a pretty small and slow track. We were testing there before the summer break so I hope the data from that test can help us with the setting this weekend. It’s a delicate balance getting the bike right to suit the demands on braking at this twisty track and let’s hope the weather is nice after last weekend!"
